Individual Horse Cremation
Your horse cremated on their own, with their ashes returned to you.
What is individual horse cremation?
Individual horse cremation means your horse is cremated on their own, so the ashes returned to you are your horse’s and your horse’s alone.
What owners tell us matters most is being certain it is their own horse coming home. Your horse is tracked at every stage, from the moment we collect them to the moment we hand the ashes back to you in person.
What this service involves
When you want to keep your horse close, an individual cremation ensures that only your horse is cremated, and that the ashes returned to you are theirs alone. It is the most personal way to say goodbye, and the choice most owners make when they wish to scatter, bury or keep their horse’s ashes at home.
- Individual cremation, only your horse’s ashes are returned to you
- Respectful collection from your home, stable or veterinary practice
- A personalised urn or scatter tube, with an optional engraved nameplate
- Hand-delivery of the ashes to your chosen location
- Optional keepsakes, polished horseshoes or mane and tail cuttings
- Compassionate support from our experienced family team

Your horse is cared for individually at every stage and tracked throughout, so the ashes we return are your horse’s and your horse’s alone.

Dignified Cremation
Your horse is cremated with the utmost care. With an individual cremation, your horse is cremated on their own and tracked throughout, so the ashes returned to you are theirs alone.
Memorial & Delivery
Choose from a range of personalised memorials and keepsakes. We then hand-deliver your chosen memorial or your horse’s ashes back to you with care, usually within around a week.
What is the difference between individual and communal cremation?
With an individual cremation, from £650, your horse is cremated on their own and only their ashes are returned to you. With a communal horse cremation, from £330, your horse is cremated respectfully alongside other animals and the ashes are not returned. Both include collection from your home, stable or veterinary practice, and both are carried out with the same dignity and care. Our guide to horse cremation costs explains what changes the final price.
How are my horse’s ashes returned to me?
Your horse’s ashes are returned in a traditional oak casket with an engraved nameplate, in a decorative urn, or in scatter tubes, and we hand-deliver them to the location you choose. We aim to return them within around a week and we keep you informed at every stage. A certificate of cremation is available on request. You can see every option on our equine memorial and keepsake options page.
Where do you collect from, and how quickly?
We collect from your home, your yard or stable, or directly from your veterinary practice, in a dedicated vehicle. We aim to collect as quickly as possible, often the same day or the next day, and we are able to reach difficult locations and continue collections in poor weather. We travel across Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Greater London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, so you can find your county on our areas we cover page. If your horse has just died, our guide to what to expect when a horse passes away explains what happens next.
FAQs
Questions about individual horse cremation
How much does it cost to have a horse cremated?
Individual cremation starts from £650, with your horse’s ashes returned in a traditional oak casket with a nameplate, or in scatter tubes. Communal cremation starts from £330, where ashes are not returned. Both include collection from your home, stable or veterinary practice. The final cost can depend on your horse’s size and any memorial options you choose, so please call us on 01376 331136 for an exact quote.
How do I know the ashes returned are my horse’s?
With an individual cremation your horse is cremated on their own and carefully tracked throughout the entire process, so the ashes returned to you are your horse’s and your horse’s alone.
How long does the cremation process take?
We aim to return your horse’s ashes to you within around a week, though this can vary. We will keep you informed at every stage so you are never left wondering.
Do you provide a certificate of cremation?
Yes, for individual cremations we can provide a certificate of cremation on request. Please mention this when you arrange the service.
What if my horse passes away at the veterinary practice?
We collect directly from veterinary practices across the region. Simply let your vet know that you would like W. Martin & Son to care for your horse, and we will arrange everything with them.
What can I do with my horse’s ashes?
There are several ways to honour your horse. Some owners place the ashes in a decorative urn or keepsake box, others scatter them in a meaningful place such as a favourite field or stable, and some choose a pet cemetery with a memorial they can visit. The choice is entirely personal.
Can I keep the horseshoe?
Yes. Polished horseshoes are a popular keepsake, and we can also prepare mane and tail cuttings. Just let us know when you arrange the cremation.
What memorial and keepsake options do you offer?
We offer traditional oak caskets, decorative urns, scatter tubes, engraved nameplates, polished horseshoes and mane or tail keepsakes. We are happy to talk you through what feels right for you.

The staff were amazing, the service I can’t fault and so glad to find them at a time of need. Really lovely people, reasonably priced, really competitive compared to others when you’ve got an unexpected loss. Highly recommended and thank you to you all xx
From the first difficult call to receiving my pony’s ashes back, the service from Martin’s has been of the highest standard. Professional and understanding, we couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you.
Very professional, compassionate and caring. Returned my fur baby home to me quickly and the box was presented so beautifully. I can’t recommend this company enough. Thank you for all you’ve done x
Martins were absolutely fantastic. From the ladies in the office who made things simple and easy to organise, to Trevor who came to collect our horse, all were amazing. Professional, caring, and allowed us all the time we needed, which made a very difficult day that bit easier.
Found W. Martin and Son on Google and they were the best price to come and collect my horse. The service was fantastic, they came out in a special 4x4 vehicle in the snow and delivered him back in just over a week. Highly recommended, thank you.
The man who came was very nice. He did his job with sympathy and dignity. Thank you.
